Original Article: Lazer Sword and EPROM arrive for their first night at WüRK

Lazer Sword is a New York and San Francisco-based live electronic act and production duo at the forefront of an emerging sound fusing anything from rap, electro, dubstep and grime to form a new kind of club experience. On stage, Lazer Sword is a hands-on affair, evolving further with every performance. Atypical of most DJ/producer sets, Lazer Sword performs the material to the audience as a highly improvised live production showcase. Tried and true dance music with a flare for the boom-bap, Lazer Sword has built substantial buzz by way of their live shows, their recently released mixtapes Blap To The Future, an XLR8R podcast and an exclusive mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC Radio 1 show. They are currently finishing up remixes for Eliot Lipp, Machinedrum, STS9 and others.

“We like to make music that sounds like your favorite top 40 rap music chopped up into a tornado, filled with razor blades and molasses…. or maybe like Frank Zappa rocking the homemade Lil’ John tank-top at the rooftop party.  It’s fun to make and hopefully to listen to as well,” says the band’s website.

Also debuting in Reno this evening is EPROM from SF Bay Area. EPROM is known for his diverse, funky and energetic sets, which cross the lines between live remixing and manipulation of hip hop and dubstep with his own obscenely bass-heavy neurocrunk transmissions.  EPROM has played alongside artists like Flying Lotus, The Glitch Mob, Skream, Lazer Sword, Kode9, Mochipet, Rustie, and many others.  EPROM has worked with internationally renowned MCs and has slated multiple vinyl releases in the coming year.  DJ supporters include Starkey, Jakes, Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, Rustie, Megasoid, Zombie Disco Squad, Riton, Basement Jaxx, and BBC Radio One’s Mary Anne Hobbs

This very special evening at WüRK starts at 10pm and Love and Light, Auditory Canvas and BeeLow supports.  Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at door.  Tickets are available at The Melting Pot World Emporium, WüRK and www.initcketing.com.  21+.

Original Article: There’s a New Baker in Town

5th St. Bakehouse has opened in Reno.

At first glance, people don’t know what a bakehouse is but owner and Pastry Chef Dan Carter describes it perfectly, “It’s a restaurant with the heart of a bakery!”.
Carter studied at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa, California although he is a Reno local. After finishing his education, he spent many years in the wine country baking up perfect breads, cakes and pastries to pair with wines and entrees. “Being a pastry chef in a place where the wine and food is of such superb quality was a challenge….people often didn’t leave room for dessert!”, says Carter. Despite this, Carter managed to make a name for himself with perfectly balanced desserts that offered a twist of the ordinary such as his legendary Habanero Bon Bons. The divine confection starts with a generous portion of habanero-infused vanilla bean ice cream, coated in a dark chocolate ganache, rolled in toasted hazelnuts and topped with a delicate sliver of candied habanero.

After almost six years of baking in the wine country Carter decided he wanted to come back home and practice his love of baking in his hometown of Reno. Hence 5th St. Bakehouse was born. It is located at 953 W. 5th St. on the corner of 5th St. and Keystone in the Keystone shopping center. It offers breakfast and lunch and is open Monday thru Saturday 6am-6pm and Sunday 8am-4pm. People often come in for warm whole wheat croissants in the morning of which Carter can often tell you how many layers he folded into them. The coffee is 100% organic and free-trade and diners can enjoy free wi-fi with or without a purchase. As a matter of fact, 5th St. Bakehouse has so many regular customers that many of the staff greet customers by name or with a hug at the door. It is a friendly place to meet for a hearty breakfast or casual lunch. The menu is based on baking components and offers mostly sandwiches made on daily baked breads such as focaccia, potato buns and buttermilk cheddar rolls, all Carter’s original recipes. And although the recipes and menu tries to stay true to baking there was one thing Carter had to have that isn’t baked….ice cream! As a pastry chef, he loves the creativity that ice cream gives him. For the Fourth of July holiday weekend, he created a Craker Jack ice cream that is even served with a hidden treat, on the side of course, just like when you were a kid. The breads and pastries have become such a phenomenon in the neighborhood that 5th St. Bakehouse now provides pastries to The Hub in Reno and breads to Joe Bob’s Chicken Joint after only being open for 2 months and Carter gets special orders for cakes and pastries almost every day.

Overall, 5th St. Bakehouse is a unique eatery in Reno that just has to be experienced.
